When someone nearby searches for “plumber near me” or “best pizza in Troy”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular search results. Getting into that “local pack” is one of the most valuable things a small business can do online. Here is a practical checklist to get started.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest factor in local search. Claim it, verify it and fill in every field: categories, services, hours, service area, photos and a clear description of what you do.
2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent
Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should match exactly everywhere they appear: your website, Google, Yelp, Facebook and industry directories. Inconsistencies make it harder for Google to trust your information.
3. Pick the right primary category
Your primary category tells Google what you are. Choose the most specific one that fits, then add secondary categories for the other services you offer.
4. Ask happy customers for reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and whether people click. Make it easy by sending a direct review link after a job is done, and reply to every review, good or bad, politely and promptly.
5. Create a page for each service and area
A single “Services” page rarely ranks for everything. Give each main service its own page with useful detail, and mention the towns you serve naturally in the content.
6. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on phones. A site that loads quickly, shows your phone number prominently and makes it easy to call or book will turn more of those searches into customers.
7. Post updates and photos regularly
Google Business Profile posts, new photos and answered questions signal an active business. A short update every week or two is enough to keep your profile fresh.
Where to start
If you only do one thing this week, complete your Google Business Profile. It costs nothing and it is where most local customers will see you first. If you would like a second pair of eyes on your local search presence, get in touch.
